Fit it In! - Resolution #2
Fitness… Who hasn’t put this one on their list of resolutions? The good news is that if you live in Boise, you really don’t have an excuse!
We have gazillions of trails right out our back door, not to mention the Boise Greenbelt. Walking is one of THE BEST ways to start, so get out there at start! You can also check out the numerous Ridge to Rivers trail heads if you’re looking for something more interesting - or challenging - than the flat pavement in your neighborhood. You can visit this site for more information: http://www.ridgetorivers.org/.
If that’s not your style and your more comfortable going to a gym, there are lots of options. The local favorite is Idaho Athletic Club http://www.idahoathleticclub.com/ which is local to the bone. But here are some things to consider to make your transition to a more active lifestyle a successful one!
1. Make it convenient. If you’re going to sign up for a gym, find one that’s easy to get to - close to work or home.
2. Pick something you enjoy - if you like fresh air, look into skiing, snowshoeing, or another outdoor sport, to get you started. Then when it warms up, try hiking, kayaking, or cycling.
3. Set a goal. This can be weigh loss, but if ultimately, you want to be in better shape, make it something interesting like participating in a race, 5K or sporting event like the Race to Robie Creek http://www.robiecreek.com/, Komen Race for the Cure (Mother’s Day Weekend) or Women’s Fitness Celebration http://www.celebrateall.org/.
4. Talk to your doctor. This is really important - your Doc can give you guidelines based on your current health and suggest a starting point.
5. Get a personal trainer. This might seem expensive, but it is really an awesome way to get back into fitness. A trainer will show you how to do your exercises properly to avoid injury, give you tips, and hold you accountable.
6. Find someone to hold you accountable - or better yet, a fitness pal!
Have more suggestions you’d like to share! Feel free to post!!!

An apple a day and a 30 minute walk pales to the health and fitness benefits of a good night’s sleep. Sleep is supposed to be 1/3 of our life. Here’s hoping your readers will make sleep a priority this year by going to bed at the same time each night, getting up at the same time each mornings and keeping this schedule into the week-end. Here’s hoping for sweet dreams.
