Catering a Party with help from Costco

A friend recently asked me what we fed our 40-50 guests recently at my mom’s 70th birthday party.  She is in the throws of planning a similar party and needed some ideas.  Here’s what we served…

1. Birthday Cake from Albertsons - normally they do an amazing job, but I don’t think they got the order quite right, and it had WAY too much filling inside, to the point that the layers were moving off each-other.  Typically though I prefer the white cake with butter cream frosting and raspberry filling because it is just not as sweet as Walmart, Costco or Pastry Perfection cakes.  This one, however, was too sweet (I think they got the type of frosting wrong.)

2.  Head to Costco!  In our case we were not feeding dinner, but just finger foods.  Here’s what we did:

- Cream Puffs (hit of the party…not one puff left!)  I’ve been looking for an excuse to buy these, and the party provided just that.  I don’t trust myself with a bucket of those in my freezer for good reason!  Pull these out about 15 min. before the party and arrange on a plate.

- Tortilla Chips and Cream Cheese Salsa.  THis is a huge hit in our house…and again, the cream cheese salsa disappeared!

- Rice Crackers and dip.  In our case, I bought the hummus.  Many complements on both the crackers and hummus.

- Sees Peanut Brittle (brought by my Aunt and Uncle from California).  One word: Disappeared. Perhaps the best PB I’ve ever had…

- Strawberries - cut them up or dip them in Chocolate.  We did both.  VERY SWEET!

- Grapes.  We cut up small groups of red and green grapes for a colorful display.  Delicious!

3.  Don’t forget the drinks!  We simply had coffee (regular and decaf) and a punch bowl of 7-UP mixed with Raspberry Sherbet.

I think that’s about it.  Kept it simple and easy, which made visiting with the guests a breeze while keeping the food supply up!

One last thing - don’t forget the flowers!

  • I’m in the process of planning my mom’s 65 party/retirement party and was thinking of Costco too! Love your ideas! The cream cheese salsa dip..is that from Costco too?

  • Hi Susan - yep! Sure is! It’s yummy. We just had some friends over not too long ago and I bought another tub. It’s great in (or on) burritos, too.
    Good luck with your party!
