It’s a sad day for us here at the Boise Goodlife.
We received some devastating news today that, though it crosses state lines, is extremely relevant to everyone here at home.
We have some very close relatives who arrived in Colorado earlier this week to join a bicycling tour. They do this every year. It’s something they plan carefully for and anticipate a great deal.
They joined the tour through the Rocky Mountains yesterday and it appears the ride, which was supposed to go on through July 20, may already be over. One of their cycling friends was hit and killed by a driver…who then did a U-turn and sped away as fast as he/she could.
I haven’t gotten all the details yet, however since they were traveling in the mountains, the likelihood that there was not much of a shoulder to ride on is high. Yet, biking in a group, with a tour operator, there were likely many signals to that driver to be on guard and take it easy. I hope this guy fesses up and turns him/herself in, but I also feel very sorry for them, as they must be experiencing incredible anguish knowing they killed another person.
We have a lot of cyclists in Idaho, and with gas being as it is, more and more people are finding bicycle riding to be a very economical way to get around. PLEASE, PEOPLE, SLOW DOWN AND SHARE THE ROAD!!! Yes, I get it…there are some cyclist out there who drive/ride like complete idiots (I have been driving behind you, and I implore you to wear a helmet and stay as close to the shoulder as possible), however, at the end of the day, I don’t think anyone wants to be in the shoes of this Colorado driver who is now responsible for the end of a life.
Sorry to end the day on a glum note, but this is serious stuff. Thanks for listening.

“they must be experiencing incredible anguish knowing they killed another person”
Somehow I doubt this.

Fixup – Perhaps I’m an idealist, but I prefer to hope that they are somewhat human…and unless they are a cold-hearted serial killer (which I guess they could be), I’d like to think that they have even an ounce of feeling in them… One can hope…
